my connect van 1.8 tdci 54 plate was bought with injector fault which was cured and then turbo failed, dumping oil from a small split in exhaust. leak wasnt noticed and while running idle and up\down street it lost a considerable amount. the turbo was replaced and now i have a very bad white smoke problem. my thoughts are that it is caused by settled oil in exhaust system as when it clears and i drive away it starts again after i corner the vehicle. also i have a whistle noise from the back of the engine somewhere but cant pinpoint it. Any thoughts\suggestions please as im going outta my mind!!!

Burning oil causes blue hazy smoke, unburnt diesel causes white smoke, or is it steam?

smoke is definately white, maybe a slight blueness to it but it smells like burning oil too!!!

also it is not too bad at first but as soon as the hissing noise starts, it worsens!!

The hissing noise sounds like an air leak to me. Probably post turbo.

Had something similar (smoke) when I changed a head gasket, turned out to be coolant in the exhaust, burnt away eventually.

i dont think that its coolant as the amount that i have run it, it should be gone by now!! when it gets to half on temp guage now it sort of misses when i throttle now and smoke is really thick

after sitting down and scratching my head....i have realised that i now have 3x turbo units that all have different parts are good, well i have been told that u can change the centre "cartridge". so on realising that i have 2x nackered bearings, and 1x good one but the breather hose from actuator is snapped at nipple on main outer shell. can i just use the good cartridge and the good shell with actuator breather and make one gudden

Was the intercooler cleaned out after the turbo failure?

And yes, you should be able to swap the good exhaust/compressor housings onto the good turbo core, provided they are all the same model of turbo.

There will almost certainly be a big o-ring on the compressor side that seals the housing. You are supposed to renew them, but you might get away with reusing it (try the old trick of boiling it in water).

cheers mate i'll try that, an old friend did sat kettle water was good to use, does it work on pipes also ? i.e...air pipe between turbo and air box as this is where i suspect the air whistle is coming from, ref previous topic.

after fixing the previous turbo problems the van ran sweet. today while driving home the bloody thing has started making a strange ticking noise!!! it was running and then when the turbo actuated, it was whistling like a brand new van and felt amazing considering that i fixed it myself. now when it actuates, i still get the whistle but with a slight ticking noise behind the whistle.... ANY IDEAS PLEASE??????
