Ford Focus 1.8TDCI
Discussion
Hi, I am noticing that when accelerating most often in 2nd, in my 1.8tdci Focus 2009 62k quite a lot of smoke appears to be coming from the exhaust.
This is my first diesel car, and I am curious as to what it is that causes this. Have had the car since 20k, serviced every year at a Ford dealership, only since around 55k this has started happening, and only under quite high revs. I can't tell exactly how bad it is as this car has tinted rear windows, but I notice it when people are behind me in the dark as their headlights show it.
Are there any ways of preventing this or is it just a byproduct of having a diesel engine? Also, what is it that causes it - maybe a build up of particulate matter in the exhaust system?
This car does not have a DPF, was £120 per year for RFL, but this has just increased by a cheeky £10 to £130 pa.

Hi,
My wifes BMW 120D also does this - it too dosnt have a DPF. My reasoning is just a build up of carbon in the exhaust and maybe the EGR. Does it clear if you hold it at higher revs / keep the same throttle (not realy a throttle but you know what i mean) loading applied through the next gear(s)?
