learn from home mechanics

If I wanted to learn more about mechanics without a desire to become fully qualified (i don't want to do this as a career) would it be better to learn from home by getting an older bike and ripping it apart and playing about with it, or doing an evening course around work?

I learned most of my skills from a Haynes manual and the mistakes I made.
I notable was rear wheel bearing on an XR3i didn't read the last paragraph after torquing the nut up.
