Freeing a stuck cylinder head
Discussion
Latest project is fixing up a Porsche 924S with head gasket failure. (plus a few other minor woes)
I've removed every nut and bolt I can find and lifted off all the add-ons but the head is stuck fast. Just hoping that it is not the studs seized in the head!
Is it acceptable practice to turn the engine over on the starter to 'blow' it free?
If not then does anyone have some advice on alternative methods?

assuming you have removed the cam housing and the hidden bolts in there? and all the coolant pipe bolts in the head? and the rear cambelt cover bolts below the cam pulley?
ive never had one stuck on the block before, wouldnt recommend cranking the engine tbh. there is a small lug on the front of the head iirc that you can lever against.
also, a failed head gasket is often a misdiagnosis of a failed oil cooler, make sure you check that too!

Thanks Ant, That's reassuring to know they don't customarily stick.
Yes, cam housing is off and the hidden nuts removed. Upon further examination I think the problem is the two machine screws which go through the head above the temp transmitter. One came out fine but the other sheared off and I expect the shaft of the bolt is seized as it goes through the head. Have to drill it out at next session.
Was it the head gasket? No oil/water contamination but water leaking out at the head joint under the exhaust manifold. I note you say that the gaskets rot and the car has been standing for a couple of years so that's what I'm expecting to see.
Your advice is much appreciated. I am now inspired to get on with the job! I'll let you know how it goes.
