So what’s happened to the likes of Jizer and Gunk? They now appear to near to be neat diesel, or at least smell like it and I don’t remember them ever smelling this bad in the past. I made the mistake of washing some parts near the back of the house and the run off went down the back wall so the whole house now smells of diesel- this makes me very unpopular with the wife. Any recommendations for a cleaner that can be used outside an HGV yard?

Autosmart G101 is worth a look, detergent based so should not smell too bad. Not used it personally but it seems to get good reports.

Might not smell any better and perhaps not too eco friendly but good old paraffin takes some beating, imho.

If you know anyone who works in a workshop that has one of those parts cleaners where they come and change the fluid once a month or whenever ask them to "borrow" a gallon or two of fluid before the guy changes it wink

ETA..... couldn't think of the name, Safety Kleen

What you don't want is one of these solvent free, eco friendly things. Had one on demo where I used to work, not impressed!

Most of the better solvents have been restricted due to VOC regs and the like, so they're probably not far off diesel these days!

Anyhow, if you go over to the Bilt Hamber site, they sell a water-based degreaser called Surfex HD - don't sigh just yet, it's really good, better than most solvent based stuff you can get over the shelf, so there's little smell, it'll take off dirt as easily as it removes oil and it's not quite as bad for your hands if you have issues with solvents. Oh, and if you get it and the run-off from the engine you were cleaning all over the carpet (ahem, whoops) - at least it comes off with a damp cloth before you get castrated...

If you need brownie points with the missus, it's unreal for cleaning ovens, etc, so you can have it done in 5 minutes and pretend you've been at it hours when she walks in.
Great distraction tactic for covering your tracks if you've stuck a cylinder head in the dishwasher.

Like the O/P, I was a life-long user of gunk and jizer but agree its been getting harder to use it and getting putrid smells.

Jusr decreased entire underside and drivetrain of my merc with bilt hamber surfex HD and it was as good as gunk but foamed up great and you can use neat with stiff brushes for bad areas and diluted for not

Buy on ebay for 20 quid for 5 litres, lasts ages.
