Expert advice required here guys. I am close to getting my old 528 back on the road but before it came off the road it had clutch issues. I kept having to pump the pedal to get pressure. I replaced the slave as the old one looked suspect.

I attempted to bleed the system, assumed that the master was also duff (probably £200 down the drain) and replaced it. Then re attempted to bleed the system, no joy. I then found the reverse bleed method. Tired it and found the bleed nipple on my new slave had a duff thread.

Replaced the slave (under parts warranty) and tried reverse bleeding again but I cannot get the air out. I can re fill the reservoir at the top no problem but I suspect air is getting back in the system some how (all the pipes and hoses seem okay).

A couple of questions, when I gently pump in the brake fluid, a small amount drips from were the nipple screws in, is this normal? I do have a good seal around the nipple but fluid gets past, could it be drawing air there.

Could it be that my little (clean) oil can has had enough and is pulling in air, I don't see any big bubbles?

When back bleeding I normally pump the oil can before attaching it to the nipple so as little air is in as possible. Pump til the reservoir is half full then try the pedal if its still spongy I normally get the pedal pressed and crack the nipple for a second or so. Normally does the trick. I use a garden weed sprayer now for bleeding I've retired the old oil pot!

try this. with the bleed nipple closed, pump the pedal reasonably quickly, making sure that it comes right to the top each time. do it say 10 times. Let the pedal come back fast. on the 10th time, hold it down and get someone to open, then close the bleed nipple.

repeat as many times as it takes to get a pedal.

Also make sure that you have a little bit of play in the pedal, in other words that the master cylinder piston can come right back.

just one other thing to check, that the slave cylinder is fitted correctly, sounds daft but I recently did clutch on my van and when I was trying to bleed it, it had bent the plunger and then pushed it out.

Although a bleed nipple should never leak when tightened, and will draw air in on the return if it leaks under pressure!
