MG midget A series emmission
Discussion
Hello, can anyone shed some light on my midget A series problem please, I did the motor up, balanced crank and cooper s pistons, etc, and fitted a moss rear flywheel seal conversion but it leaks oil, changed the seal twice, still leaks. I also fitted recon carbs that do not have the Y piece to fit the pipe from the timing cover to create a vacuum, this is why I think it leaks at the rear seal. Tonight I fitted a new hose from the timing cover, which I have removed the wire mesh from aswell in the past, and connected to the intake manifold. On startup it sounded a lot less chuggy and more smooth, I let it warm up a bit and had to lower the idle speed considerably and then revved it up, very good pickup however a thick cloud of blue smoke each time you revved it from the exhaust. Would an emmission filter solve the oil contaminating the air? There is one available from the MG owners club that fits onto the intake manifold at £56, would it solve this?
Cheers
Iain.

The wire mesh you removed is a primitive oil separator, its purpose is to stop oil droplets being pulled into the inlet, whilst letting the fumes/vapour through to be burned.
It's a possibility that oil is being drawn up and burned causing the smoke, it would be quick and cheap to first try replacing the mesh.

Cheers Kev, yes its def the oil vapour being burned, its not such a quick fix putting mesh back in the timing cover though, it was hard work to rip it out to be honest, the valve thats on the moss site looks like it would do the job, just wondered if anyone knew before spending, cheers Iain.
Hi, yes all rebuilt, ground all valves in and new stem seals too, its only smoked since I reconnected the pipe the other night, I was running it with a small KnN breather filter there just trying to stop rear seal leaking, I've ordered the emission valve and got a ford inline mesh filter to act as the mesh in the timing cover, fingers crossed, cheers Iain.
