As I lie here in bed I can hear my air compressor nick name wheezy start up in the garage.

It is a noisy asthmatic little thing but to be fair I did pull it out of a skip and fixed it with a cut up Christmas card.

So recommendations for a decent air compressor for my garage.

It doesn't need to be portable as wheezy is tiny and can be moved around for odd jobs.

Tank size not overly important as wheezy feeds into the garage air system which has a liberated gas bottle as the main tank.

Enough oomph to run a die grinder would be great

And not too loud

Budget about 500GBP

I can't recommend a specific compressor.

But I can recommend Machine Mart and signing up for their email offers, including VAT free days (few times a year)

The cheapest thing to do would be to fix any air leaks so once the system is up to pressure it would not come on at night.

Next would be to build an insulated box for the compressor something like this http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/insulat... just makes sure you keep an eye on the temperatures and add fans if necessary.

If you want a new compressor, belt driven ones are quieter than direct drive, but they are still noisy so still stick one in a box. Mine is outside in a box to protect from the weather.

The cheapest and quietest solution is it use multiple compressors from lots of old fridges. Just get a bigger air receiver for your air grinder. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7MQJHxltE8

It is a wee bit of a lash up at the present moment.

Once i get some parts which i have on order it will be a wee bit less of a lash-up.

Also i am fitting a solenoid which will be connected to the light circuit

So lights on = air tank connected to air system

It will probably end up living in a box

Won't have enough guts to run a die grinder

I have a dentists compressor which is silent and it hasn't got the balls to run anything for more then 10 seconds.

It might end up being fitted as part of a master/slave set up

A second hydrovane. I bought one with a 150 litre tank and it is quiet enough to be able to hold a conversation when stood next to it.

You could always connect your current setup to a timer switch so it doesn't com on at night.

Switch it off when you're not using it.
