I've never bothered messing about with tracking, there were so many good places to get tracking done in the UK it wasn't worth buying the equipment. Where I live now there aren't any decent tyre places or garages that are trustworthy enough to set tracking correctly so I'm going to be buying a set.

Which set up is easy to use and accurate? Any info would be great, as I said, never done anything with it before so I'm going to have a learning curve.

I've bought and used the kit made by this company: http://www.trackace.co.uk/

It's good for wheel to wheel alignment but (obviously) won't do wheel to body/4 wheel alignment (though I can't think of any simple gauges that will). It's easy to use and gives me good results. No uneven tyre wear, good steering feel, and a cost effective kit. I have no connection to the company apart from being a satisfied customer.

ive also got the track ace , works very well unless the car is really low

ive also had good results with the string method and a ruler , is a bit more hassle to do but accurate enough if youre carefull

Thanks for the advice chaps. I think the track ace will fit the bill nicely. I don't want to be doing tracking for a living but having the facility to check and adjust after fitting new steering or suspension components would be a big advantage. I don't have a 4 post ramp so couldn't really do any adjusting without removing the tracking gauges anyway so nothing lost there.

Could you please talk me through the string method?

Thanks for that, I'll take a look a bit late when I get a minute.

I have recently made my own tracking kit using some of the older Dunlop gauges which are cheap on Ebay... have a look at my web site.

the string method is OK, but I found it quite difficult to get the car accurately aligned using this method

So if I'm using the string method and for example I have a setting of 1.2mm where is that measurement taken from. Obviously the further from the hub I go the greater the angle and therefore the measurement. Might just stick to degrees, it's given on AD and it's just a bit of simple (if I can remember it) trig but I'm curious (not in a gay way wink)

Were you trying to buy the set in Flint (north Wales) on Ebay last week then ended at £300?
