Metric threads M12 are available in several pitches, you need to measure the distance from the top of one thread to the next, M12 can be 1mm pitch, 1.25mm or 1.5mm. B and Q will probably only sell one pitch your local fastner shop should stock all, but take the indicator with you and they can make sure, you might want a Nyloc anyway, less liable to vibrate loose.

Hope this helps

It will be a metric thread, most probably M12x1.25, I'd bet my lunch on it smile

Well I'm certain I've won your lunch.

The thread is M12 x 1.5 How do I know? Count the threads, there are 14.
14 times 1.5 mm is 21 mm which is about two thirds of the 50p on show !!!

Most towns will have a nut/bolt/fastener place tucked away somewhere, they are invaluable for this sort of thing. Find your nearest one and cherish them.

Here's mine.

I seem to have a habit of 'fixing things that aren't broken' and getting myself in a mess!

I went to B&Q today
Can I just point out some statistical causation.

You need to go to an engineers merchants.

I've stopped using the big boys, (B&Q, Homebase, Halfords, Dobbies etc,) to try to support local specialist businesses. Because they focus on Sales per square foot.

I needed a new knob for my gas fire the other day, and B&Q was on the way to a fireplace firm, so I popped in and was shown a gas cooker where the 5 knobs had been stolen, because "we don't stock any thing like that".

I was given an old knob, by the fireplace firm, off a fire they'd just removed that morning, so they will be servicing my central heating in a few months.

There's plenty of life left in my old knob as well.

@ OP, buy a thread file or thread gauge for future projects.

The Japanese metric system (JASO ? IIRC) differs from the European ISO metric system as most of the 'standard' threads are of a finer pitch than ours. DIY warehouses rarely have the fine-pitch stuff in. Cross-point screwheads are a different fitting, too, being neither Phillips nor Posi.
