Just finished doing a service on a new (to me!) 2003 Mondeo 2.0 duratec. The oil filter is a paper element, and the canister lid was pretty tight. There's not enough depth to the lid to get my 3 - pronged remover on, and my "boa" kept slipping.

Rooting through my "odds and sods" box I found a random selection of jubilee clips, one was big enough to get over the lid, so I tightened it down and tapped it around with a hammer against the jubilee screw. Magic smile

Thanks, good tip. It's always satisfying finding your way round a problem/specialist tool.

I recently removed an instrument cluster, the "special" Mercedes tool was improvised with a coat hanger. biggrin

The swiss army knife of home mechanics! I remember my exhaust hanger breaking a long way from home, bought a cheap shirt from a charity shop just for the coat hanger...

I'll stick the jubilee clip idea in the old memory bank.

My best cheapskate tool...

The official tool is £50+.

I bought a pair of Halfords "Oil filter pliers" some years ago:

They are actually quite handy for the Golf's replaceable element oil filter "cap".

BUT

They were brilliant when changing the Mk4 Golf's anti roll bar bushes!
