After problems with the original central locking on my van, I'm considering installing an aftermarket central locking kit for the front doors.

Are these easy enough to do? Do you need solenoids/motors specific to your vehicle? A lot of kits on eBay claim to fit any vehicle but I can't get my head around how it can possibly connect to the car's locks if it isn't specifically designed for it?!

Edit: Oh I get it now, it replaces the physical act of pressing the locking pin itself! Nothing to do with the lock mechanism itself further down the door!!

Not sure if you have answered your own question but generally the kit either contains new lock solenoids or not, if not - you generally wire the new kit into the existing C/L control box (under dash?) - Ie splice into the lock trigger wire.

This is how it worked when I added Remote C/L to a car with C/L already.

The kits with solenoids replace your hand on the locking pin :-) Generally all on a common circuit so when one is locked , the others follow. I would look for an OEM solution myself if it has no C/L at all.

Hope this helps.

Sorry to seem like a pedantic bugger, but I am sure fixing what is there would be a lot easier.

What are the problems with the fitted atndard kit?
