Audi A4 quattro deep rumble
Discussion
The car has had this issue since i bought it 7 months ago and to be honest its just starting to get on my nerves a little bit so i thought i would see if anyone had experienced similar issues.
The car is a 2.5 TDi V6 Quattro B5 shape with 164,000 miles and the engine was replaced a year back just before i bought it with a 110,000 mile unit (i have receipts and paperwork for it)
The car has been remapped but im not sure this would have anything to do with it unless its a clutch issue (it has an uprated clutch fitted)
The issue is that when in 6th gear in fairly low revs (say about 2.5k) if you come to a hill and have to put your foot down to climb or if you put your foot down on motorway etc there is a deep rumble but i can work out what it is, there is no rev change to indicate the clutch slipping nor is there any sort of drop in power.
The problem is not apparent in 5th from what i have noticed but i would have to test that.
The car is perfect to drive other than this and i just can sus out what it could be.....i was thinking the rear diff was on the way and the torque from the remap is killing it or possibly the gearbox but is this likley??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

I had this on my E39... it turned out that the silencer had come off of it's mount by an inch and was resting on the body of the car. Like yours, it only rumbled in certain situations (in my case, when decelerating under 10mph)
Best course of action would be to try and pinpoint where the sound is coming from if possible. I know you said it happens in 6th gear at a certain RPM range, but you may want to try it in a lower gear. The engine being under load seems to be a factor too from what you're saying.
If the sound can be recreated at residential speeds, perhaps getting a friend to listen as you drive by? This is how I managed to diagnose my exhaust, as it never did it at idle.
Good luck.
