Air filter for turbo help needed
Discussion
Hi all
The turbo on my car has no air filter on it, I'm a complete newbie with mechanics but know that it should have something to protect the turbo. There Isn't much space directly behind the turbo to place and air filter so I guess I need some kind of hosing to connect the two.
I want to try to fit this myself as am keen to learn and do it on a budget but am unsure of the exact parts I need.
Can someone please point me in the right direction? I will try to post some pictures. Also the turbo I believe is an old garratt model number says tb035. I can measure the outlet on the turbo to ensure the correct dimensions but I'm just a bit unsure of what parts I need is it just a case of some hosing, a filter and some clips? If so any chance someone could point me in the right direction of the suitable bits i need to buy!

You need to find a length of silicone or flexible hose on ebay which will fit over the air intake on the turbo so you can then put an air filter somewhere that it can get cool air into it. You can buy silicone hoses in all kinds of bends, straight lengths etc so you should be able to make something that works. Measure the outside diameter of the turbo inlet to get the right size. The sizes of the hoses are always given as inside diameter so that needs to match the outside diameter of the turbo. You may want an aluminium hose joiner to join the hose to your air filter. I suggest a good quality conical air filter. Again they can be had off ebay for not too much money.
Running it as it is is not good, you will get muck in the engine and anything bigger getting sucked in will chew up the turbo wheel.

have used these before.

Thanks for the reply!
So if I bought something like these three items:
http://www.autosiliconehoses.com/single-cone-perfo...
http://www.autosiliconehoses.com/silicone-hose-sho...
http://www.autosiliconehoses.com/silicone-hose-sho...
Is that all I would need or is there anything missing?
If this is is all I need would I just connect the silicone piping to the turbo and use the clip to hold it on, then connect the other end straight to the air filter?
Though, I guess with the above I wouldn't have any rigidity, and would need to somehow fix the filter to something to hold in place. Still a bit confused about exactly what is the right things to bu, so appreciate any more help anyone could give.
Thanks very much again, and sorry for being such a newb.

Looks about right, just think about the sizes to make sure it all fits together. You would usually use something like this to join the hose to the air filter:

with the hose pushed on one end with a hose clip and the filter on the other end with a hose clip.
The cheapo Chinese cone air filter I have in front of me came with a little bracket so you can pick a location and screw it down with a couple of small self tapping screws or nuts and bolts. If yours does not you can easily make something up with a bit of something from a DIY store and some nuts and bolts.
The ideal location for the air filter is somewhere where it is not sucking in hot air off the exhaust or manifold and not getting hot air from the radiator. Also try to avoid anywhere it is getting too much road spray and muck chucked at it. On most cars somewhere up front behind one of the headlights works OK, ideal place if it can be done is forward of the radiator but that's not always possible.
This pic is mine. As you can see it is a pretty simple solution with just a 90 degree silicone tube and a short joiner to connect it to the filter. You would be better with the flexible hose as you seem to be tighter for space.

About 2/3 of the way down this page you can calculate the size filter required for your application:
