What's the quality like on 'Laser' tools?

I want to change the gearbox oil on the shed and I need two different sized sump plug keys.
Halfords sell the oil and mollyslip... they also sell a set of drain/sump plug keys made by Laser for £20.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...

Will they last or will they slip/roundoff/sheer the minute I put any weight on them?

I think they put too much chocolate in them ,
I wouldn't use them or chance them , then again you do see them all over so some thing must be ok !

Never had a problem so far. I use them for special tools from time to time, lately a brake caliper rewind tool that was fine, chunky & well made. Perfect for the job. Not sure about mainstream tool box stuff but I've not had reason to complain so far.

Same for me. I can't comment on the normal spanners, sockets, etc, but the special purpose tools are fine, with stood many years of abuse from me.

If you are looking for sockets, spanners, etc. Then I'd be looking at Halfords Professional, very good kit, at affordable prices.

And that is from somebody who can't stand Halfords, for many reasons, and avoids them where at all possible.

thumbup I'll buy a set then

yes I bought all my tools from the Halfords Professional range 13 years ago (that cost a f'ing fortune buying everything in one go) haven't broken any yet... can't seem to find any Halfords Pro branded sump/drain keys though and you'd think home mechanics would need 'em scratchchin

Running snotters/sheds I always buy their oil and grab the free Halfords pro screwdriver sets when they're offered

Most of my other stuff is Draper, Clarkes Pro, King Dick :snigger: and Hilka

(finding decent quality Imperial sets is a right bh)

Agree completely. They won't stand up to pro use, but I've never had a specialised Laser tool fail. My sump key is still in good nick from a few years of use, no problem!

I's probably ok for diy /home use but if you are undoing 4/5 sump lugs a day they will have limited life in my op

I have a set of these, one of which was abused to remove the hub bolt on the front of my passat, me jumping on 4ft of scaffold pole on the end of a breaker bar with a socket on the sump plug and it's still alive, so i think they'll be fine for actually removing sump plugs.

I'll try it, I know it won't fix it... but quieter would be an improvement smile

It doesn't look like the drain plugs have been removed since it left the factory 19 years ago, I don't even know if there's any oil in the box and I can't check cause I don't have a key

I have tamper proof security torx bits for taking my MAF apart to clean it. Good value for a tool I don't use very often.

Laser tools make some good stuff for the trade.
Most timing/engine locking kits are made by them and they make a fair bit of manufacturer specific tools that would just not be available elsewhere.
They are also the manufacturers of Blue point tools for Snap on.
My extra deep reach 1/2" dr impact sockets are laser and have served 20 years service in a busy workshop on a gun, they are still perfectly usable (the 21 mm is a bit worn)and actually purchased when Laser stuff was not very good!Whereas the 17 and 19mm snap on deep impacts have been changed 3-4 times in that period.
Chances are you have tools in your toolbox that are made by laser without you even being aware of it.

I've had the laser drain key set for about 4 years and use them in a 'professional' capacity. Never had a problem with them smile

I have a few laser bits, special tools for removing bushes etc and they all perform perfectly even when being abused.
