Possible Causes of Squealing Noises From Your Engine Bay

Hi,
I have a really annoying squealing noise coming from my engine bay. It only really happens on start up if its sat overnight or if there is much moisture in the air. I have pin-pointed the noise to the area surrounding my fanbelt (i think its a fan belt, i get confused with fan belts/drive belts/serpentine belts etc).
Now i have had 3 mechanics look at it, i get different opinions all the time, they say its the belt but i have a tensioner so it could be tensioner on way out, it could be a pulley has rusted, the belt is old but was done 20,000 miles ago roughly, and the water pump has been mentioned.
Tell you what though, im not paying a single penny more on these mechanics as i want to diagnose and rectify myself. Im hearing about talcum powder on the belt to see if its moisture and the belt at fault. And CAREFUL WD40 application on the insides of the pulleys can determine whats at fault.
So any advice here would be helpful.

Well I'd probably get a new belt, which'll cost about a tenner, and while it's off, clean all the pulleys and check for oil/rust/etc, and see if any of them squeak when you turn them.
The belt was replaced fairly recently, but for the sake of a tenner i guess ill go for it.So is it an easy job to do yourself? Belt off and then new one on? Or do you need to release the tensioner etc?

You usually spray wd40 on it just to prove it is the belt squeaking. As you say it may just need a new one or you may have some wear in a drive pulley.

I have a MK1 Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec sitting at 80k, belt was done around 60k, thing is as soon as the engine heats up a bit or is run for a while, it stops squealing.
See i heard from a mobile mech and a few forums that talc powder is for the belt as WD40 would make it slip off the pulleys, thats why i was to be super careful in wd40 application and get it right in the seems of the pulleys. But iv also heard people using water/saliva on the belt to see if theres a change in noise?
Generally due to the extra load on the alternator trying to recharge the battery after starting. Makes the alternator harder to turn & a belt can slip on the pulleys. Is it worse if you turn the HRW or headlights on?
Can be down to incorrectly tensioned belt, worn belt, incorrect belt,cheapie crap belt, worn pulleys.
A quick blast of WD on the belt is an old dodge, I've used it for years with no issues. If it shuts it up its a belt/tension/pulleys issue.
What type of belts do you have, V or ribbed?
