Not come across this before. One of the family cars has been laid up unused for several months now. Battery flat reading only 5 volts on the Multimeter. It's a Halfords battery and only about two years old.

Put it on my battery charger and it started to take a charge then a few seoonds later, my charger stopped charging and the volts dropped back to 5 volts. The charger's inline fuse had blown. I connected the charger up without the fuse and the charge reading immediately went off the scale with some sparks as I connected the charger's leads to the battery terminals. Never seen anything like that.

Connected the charger to another 12 volt battery and charge reading quite normal.

Any comments as to what's up with that Halford's battery will be appreciated.

Sounds like one or more cells now have a dead short inside them. It happens when batteries are left in a state of discharge for too long.

Dead cell, 12 volt battery's actually have 6 x 2v cells. These can collapse. Usually sulphate builds up on the plates and kills them. Should be under guarantee though john? smile

Thanks for the input folks and that was an interesting read M3333.

I suspect the battery is a goner but, still looks like new... frown

Shall see what Halfords have to say.
