Extending oil pressure sensor wire: precautions?

I need to extend the sensor wire on an oil pressure gauge. Can I just cut the wire and use some general purpose wire to extend? I don't know if the wire is special and if cutting and extending would affect the reading. Thanks.

PS there are three wires to the sensor. White, Red and Black. I dont know what each does. They come from the back of the gauge (which itself just takes power and earth).
