can someone please help me with my rx8

i have a rx8 2004 with 70k on the clock full service history well looked after the other day i was driving home when i heard a bang like the exhaust blown the car cut out i got it started again the eninge light came on and there was a rattling noise and shacking below 1000rmp it would be shacking like its stalling i had to keep the revs high to get it home i last done the coil pack 2years ago i dont want to waste any money unless its needed by buying different parts. i will be very greatful for any help

forgot to say there is also a claning nosie and misfiring

Doesn't sound good, I've got a couple of RX8's and would guess at a disintegrated cat or back box fingers crossed it's nothing major

thats what im hoping it is is there away to tell if its the engine thats blown there is still power but shakes if it below 1000rpm

Apart from getting underneath and giving the cat and boxes a tap to see if you can reproduce the rattle not much else I can think of. Have you got home start might be worth getting the AA etc to come out and give you an opinion before you drive it and risk causing any (further) damage.

I'm not that mechanically minded but if the exhaust is mostly blocked then it wouldn't surprise me. Where does the clanking/rattling sound like it's coming from the engine bay or from underneath the car? If the exhaust is blocked then it would definitely cause the car to stall.

My first move would be a compression test
If its rattling and shaking does the sound come from engine or exhaust?

It sounds like under it not 100% getting it towed on Wed I paid 800 for.it last year so expected something tbh it does not sound like a tractor more clunging

Would the codes tell me compresion is low it still has its power

800 quid! Did it have a recent compression test when you brought it?

I trust you've been checking and topping up the oil after every two fill ups? Always keeping the revs under 4k until the engine is warm etc?

Bottom line that's very cheap so if it's something expensive you've had fairly cheap fun motoring

Fault codes can't tell you anything about compression unfortunately. You need special equipment to do a compression test on the RX8 so it's not something you can really do yourself.

I would suggest removing the cat and giving it a good shake off the car. I bought a decat pipe when I had issues with mine so that I wouldn't kill a replacement cat whilst sorting it. Then sold on the decat for a small loss.

Yeah just hope.I can fix it love my rx8 I will try the cat on Wed when I get it back I really hope.it is the cat or coil pack
