Wheel bearing trouble......
Discussion
So what started out as a simple job of changing the 2 front wheel bearings on a 96 toyota carina e td has turned into a bit of a nightmare.....
The ones that came were wrong....too small at 74mm external. Tried a couple of places and they all say there's 2 types but both are the same size therefore too small.
Would it be possible for a motor factor to match one up if I took the old one down? They don't seem keen but I can't think of any other way to get one!

Are you sure the first pair you have been sent were the ones you ordered, and the supplier hasn't made a mistake? It strikes me as odd that you have been sent a bearing which different to both of the options for the Carina.
Yes, a bearing specialist could almost certainly x-ref them for you and supply you a pair. I don't know where you are but I use 'Brammer Bearings'.
Aah according to your profile, 'irish boy' is in Ireland! Who'd have guessed it...
Anyway, search for bearing specialists in your area.

I work within a motor factors and to be honest if there are choices and you have had the wrong ones then the only choice would be to head to your local motor factors with the old bearing for them to match up , that`s what we would be willing to do as in the back of most books there are sizes and dimensions of the bearings or even numbers on the bearings for the guys to call a technical dept to help with finding the correct bearing.
Cheers. The old bearing measures 78mm, the new ones measure 74mm.....tried a couple of different places and they all say a 74mm "should" be the right one. I get silence when I tell them I have the old one in my hand and its not 74mm.
I'll take the old one in and see if they can match something.

If ya give me a registration of the vehicle in question i can have a look for you for a part number as a heads up before heading to your local factors ?I'll take the old one in and see if they can match something.

I will give it a go !!
Unfortunately EVERYONE is listing just a 74mm bearing as you say , my only other suggestion would be numbers of the bearing and see if they can be crossed over ??? , i assume you are measuring the external diam of the bearing and not the hole in the hub ( sorry just have to check ) . The only way would be to see the bearing and then try to match up in hand or numbers .Locknut said:
@ Scoobyfreak: Just out of curiosity would you look to see if the bigger bearing is listed for a larger Toyota. Back in the 80's Ford seemed to have a policy of using whatever was on the shelf on the day the car was built, maybe Toyota are doing the same.
will do and let you know Locknut said:

the closest i could find was a Supra MA70 >93 with an OD 77mm and ID 42mmall the others are either 74mm or 82mm even the rav4 dont even come in at 78mm
hope this helps ?

Have you looked in other parts of the Toyota empire such as Lexus, Daihatsu or (your own?) Subaru?
I could have looked further into it but all i really have to go on is it`s a 78mm od and no other measurements , there will be something that is the size required but it`s a pig in a poke without all the dimensionsGassing Station | Home Mechanics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
