The wipers on my z4 (56 plate)cut out on the M1 in heavy rain last week(on the day that my wife was driving naturally). The car had to be recovered by the AA. They are working again now but I suspect the relay. The BMW dealer in Luton cannot tell me which relay I need (but sold me a green one on the basis that this is the one they commonly replace) and cannot (or will not) tell me where the wiper relay can be found in the car.

Can anyone tell me where the relays are located? internet searches have not helped. I have looked at the fuse box behind the glove box and looked in the fuse box on the passenger side of the engine bay but cannot see any relays.

Unfortunately due to a death in the family over christmas I now need the car to be reliable and this has become quite urgent.

Thanks

i cant tell you for sure but easiest way is to operate the wipers and listen for the clicking, its bound to be buried somewhere inaccessable if it has one

cheers. I am really hoping it is the relay! Finding a rain free couple of hours to pull everything apart could be tricky.

Well it is not the relay. The relay is situated on the back of the fuse panel located behind the glove box. Getting to it has required removing the glove box and trim panel above the passenger footwell and then coaxing the whole assembly the resulting gap. This is not something that I would like to repeat anytime soon.

Needless to say that having changed the relay and the fuse that I blew in the process had no effect on the wipers. They have started working again on their own which is a mixed blessing. I suspect that it is a problem with the contacts on the motor but that will have to wait for a dry day..........

Chances are it's a faulty wiper motor quite common for the rest contact to fail.
Sometimes u can operate them and turn them off and they will carry on for 20 secs or so and then just stop in the middle of the windscreen. Hope this helps
