Today I was planning on changing the oil for my 52 plate polo. After half an hour of making sure I could loosen the oil filter cap I decided I needed a oil filter socket not a suitable spanner. I tidied up underneath the bonnet and shut it and set off to go buy said filter socket. The bloke at the shop asked me to open to bonnet to advise which socket I needed, when I pulled the bonnet release it was as if the wire was not attached at the other end. I took off the undertray and I could see the cable had come away from the latch mechanism, I must of knocked it with the spanner (not much room in a 1.9 diesel. So to cut to the chase after spending 2 hours trying to open the bonnet from underneath the car I gave up and need help. I can reach the latch and have tried using a screwdriver to move the catch, I can feel where the cable needs to go but when I get it to fit into place it does nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
There is no way that you 'touching' it with a spanner would undo the cable...

It must have been broken before or we are not getting the whole of the story.
To remove the cable you have to angle it at such a position it is normally easier to remove the latch itself.

Is there any movement in the bonnet when pulling up?

What you need to do is remove the plastic grill that runs under the bonnet (well it does on a Golf..) to try and get to the latch itself. Either this or the bumper / grill insert.

Hope you get it done.

It was the only explanation I could think of, space is limited so me trying to undo the filter cap with a spanner must of knocked it. The bonnet latch and mechanism in the cabin worked fine before I set about trying to changing oil filter.

Finally got it open, scratched up my arm on a rusty nut/screw/thingy. Good thing I have skinny arms and a tetanus shot. Time for bacon and a trip to the auto tool place.
