Anybody had any experience of this?

I've got a broken heat shield under the petrol tank of my Celica, which is making something of a racket. I'm not keen on paying Mr T for a replacement, but neither am I keen on either drilling the old rivet out of the tank or welding up the bracket.

That leaves attempting to glue the old bracket back together. Liquid metal appears to be the stuff for the job, but I don't much fancy crawling under the car in this weather if it is going to fall apart immediately.

Alternatively, is the heat shield necessary? It is near the back of the exhaust, so I can't imagine it will get that hot.

Thanks,

Have used the evostik metal putty as on http://www.bostik.co.uk/diy/product/evo-stik/Hard-... for an Escort exhaust at a leaking, rusted weld. It didn't set as fast as advertised but set fast enough in the time they say and set very hard over a few weeks. I think it lasted about 3 years, outliving the rest of the exhaust. Obviously it wasn't structural but it's what I'd try.

I've used Araldite successfully on this sort of thing. Heat helps it go off. I think the 24hr stuff may not be waterproof though.

I have carried out repairs on a holed sump and radiator which although were intended as temporary job lasted for years and became permanent.

Make an overlapping ally patch and pop rivet it in place.

No progress made yet, due to the perpetual darkness at the moment.

I'm thinking of making a replacement bracket of some sort rather than mending the old one. Will have to bond it in some way though as it attaches to the underside of the petrol tank. I don't fancy drilling into that.

All advice has been noted and will hopefully be put into place at some point over Christmas.

Thanks all!
