Over the last few days I've had a whistle coming from the turbo on a mk3 clio dci 85.

It only seems to be when cold and only when you lift your foot from the accelerator and changing gear, sounds kind of like a dump valve style noise. In the 5 months I've owned the car it's never made this noise.

Any idea's if the noise is a bad sign or normal?

worth doing a basic inspection of the turbo hoses and pipework, you may have a split or detached pipe

When mine (330d) had the same symptoms the turbo was gone within a couple of months. The dump valve type noise when coming off throttle is due to imbalance in the shaft as the bearings are worn.

I'd be looking at getting it repaired now before it blows it guts and takes other things with it.

Bryan.

My Rover 75 CDT has started doing this ever since I changed the oil from 10w-40 to 5w-30, although it is more like turbo whistle when accelerating. Have you changed the oil lately

A thinner oil is likely to make any bearing noise that much more noticeable.
