Hi all advice please, my golf wont start! Pronblem is it trys turnin over say 1-2 turns sslowly then starter motor starts clicking, all cables to stater motor are in good con and battery is fully charged, ive found one cable which has broke on the screw connection whic looks like it bonds to the engine/gear box area just to the left-hand side of the starter motor, this cable from there goes past the s/m and disapears under the battery mount. Ive tried wedjing the broken end in plase and starting the car, but no luck:-( could this be the cause of the problems?? Please let me know your thaughts, thanks - Richard

Sounds like the earth strap. Fix a jump lead from chassis or battery to engine if this fix's it you have found the problem.

Yes negative earth. Use a decent thick jump lead not one one of the micky mouse budget jobbies from the petrol station.

to check starter, remove and run leads direct from battery to starter. neg to body of starter, pos to lge terminal on solenoid. Hold starter with your foot as if it's all ok it will give a 'kick' when in spins

Well, worry over - i still think the broken cable was part to blame as the car wouldnt start even with a good booster pack which has started the car no problems in the past, i could not locate any jump leeds but noticed dash lights where fadeing so my so called good battery which i fully charged yesterday is a scrapper, i put my van battery on with broken cable touching engine and it fired straight away!! So can anyone recomend which battery to get? My car is a convertable with a clifford alarm which gulps power, i will probably only use the car at weekends so need a good battery to keep alarm happy! Thanks, Richard

varta make some of the best batteries, consider putting it on a conditioner if its stood for long periods or you will kill it in no time.
