This is an interesting paper.

It seems reasonable that animism came first and is linked to our theory of mind.

I did see something the other day about how type of religion is also correlated with the type of human society eg hunger gatherers are usually pantheists whereas herders are more likely to be monotheistic (and often with a strict and omnipotent god that deals out punishment for human transgressions).
