The Padlock on the Space Shuttle Hatch
Discussion
Seems "recollections may vary" about exactly why it was there but this is an interesting read.
What happens when an astronaut in orbit says he’s not coming back?
Seems it's still a thing on some of the newer spacecraft too.

I'm a bit sceptical. If someone puts duct tape or a padlock on the outside of the hatch, how do they get back in?
They’re on the inside?Edited by Super Sonic on Saturday 13th July 18:37
I would say that if you opened a hatch while in space (which is what the lock was there to stop) you wouldn’t really need to worry about getting back in!

I expect anyone trying the break in would be shot to bits in short order.
Quite. The convoy has a fair bit of resilience, including people you would struggle to notice.Gassing Station | Science! | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
