Northern lIghts in se England?
Discussion
Afternoon all
Reading the news today, apparently the Northern Lights will be visible all over the UK.
I have always wanted to take my kids (12 and 13) to see this before thry get too silky teenager-ish, but was expecting a trip up to north Scotland to do so.
Checking out this interactive light map, choices for me (near Gatwick) are pretty slim: either Leith Hill in Surrey, Ashdown forest or nip down the A23 to the south downs somewhere.
My question is before giving up a nights sleep: would I be wasting my time?
I don't expect it to be quite like "the pictures" given I think they're often taken with an open shutter, but I'll do it if it's worth doing?
(I appreciate this question will be easier to answer tomorrow morning!)
Thanks

Independent says this:
The Northern Lights will be visible on Friday and Saturday as far south as Liverpool in the UK, while also reaching more than a dozen US states. Depending on the intensity of the solar activity, there is a small chance that sightings will be possible throughout the UK.

Well that will teach me to look at the Daily Mail then!

They've been visible numerous times this year and back end of 2023. Plenty of pics on my local facebook page of them in Cheshire, North Wales, Merseyside. Tonight is supposed to be a huge storm, they've already been visible in Ukraine, India and New Zealand.
Annoyingly, I drive to Dundee 4 nights a week and seen bugger all, then checked on Facebook when getting home and there are pictures of them from Cheshire, Merseyside, North Wales, Scotland, Lake District etc lol!

If you look at the current ovation map, I’ve never seen the map so bright green over here (Aberdeenshire). We’ve seen them up here when the ovation map is quite faded, so I think you have a good chance of seeing them in the SE with the current forecast.
The view north from Leith, looks over London so not sure that’d be a good choice. I’d head west to get away from the city glow.
On the weather thread, Puggit said that they were seen in Ukraine and India - not exactly northern countries.
Have fun all - getting mega excited!

Some great pics on Twitter from Austria and Germany. Wonder how long we'll have to wait for the same?
I guy I follow on Facebook who goes all over watching them and had a few pics on Sky News the other week of it from Snowdonia has said it is pretty much guaranteed in UK straight after darkI'm getting a bit of green if I use the Slow Shutter app on my iPhone but nothing much for the naked eye yet. If it starts to look promising I'll walk to somewhere about 15 minutes away where I can get a good view. I've been out for a walk but the route I took was bligted by those wretched new white street lamps.
