They've not had the most successful lunar history, with only about 1/3 of thier missions successful, compared to about 75% for the US. Given that it's thier first lunar mission in nearly 50 years, so basically nobody in the organisation has any experience of it, it's not a massive surprise, but I guess a little over hyped politically and given the Russian attitude towards failure could be catastrophic for Roscosmos.

Lets hope Chandrayaan-3 has more luck this week.
