I stumbled across this

If you look at the harmful phrases scientists can use that can be harmful it turns out "discovery" is one.
Tricky ...
Thoughts ?

Who pays for this rubbish?
Anyway, you can have some fun suggesting 'harmful' words.
eg 'Cyanide' is a harmful word, propose it be replaced with 'plant-based liquid'...
NB I see that 'the team' are all in their 20s so this kind of st is all they know: https://www.eeblanguageproject.com/team

If you sign in you can tell these poor sheltered creatures about a word that you find offensive or harmful, and suggest a replacement word for it.
I told them that I found the word 'woke' offensive and should be replaced with 'nonsense'.
I urge you all to get stuck in and give them a glimpse of the big scary world that lies outside academia.

“Citizen science” is harmful to non-citizens who are excluded by that language
Eh?
They are not part if it so why would they be included?
Let's ban organic chemistry, because its harmful to non-organic compounds who are excluded by that language.
Can someone stop the world please I want to get off.

I don't see the issue here at all.
'Discovering' a new place, population etc is to experience it for the first time. It is a more accurate phrase that to 'visit' since they may have visited the same before.
'Championing' is to defend the cause of or vigorously support. Again, nothing incorrect there.
This language is not new - perhaps those who are unhappy have just not been exposed to it in their usual reading or circles.

Like retirement boredom perhaps? I told them that I found the word 'woke' offensive and should be replaced with 'nonsense'.

I jest!
I was thinking about this since posting it and it does seem to be connected to something akin to Johnny Morris, all those years back who did kids animals programs
He is in disfavour nowadays as Anthropomorphism run riot apparently.
That's 30 points on scrabble by the way and stealing tiles.
Science should be science but popularising it gets the younger generation on board.
Saying you can't have certain words .. that is a negative aspect that does not foster the scientific goal of incremental expansion without any constraints.
Words are just words after all.

I suggest that having to say 'A' when you mean 'B' perverts the course of science. Are these loons science graduates or arts graduates?
As for calling an 'A' a 'B', did I hear a new variety of sexual persuasion called a 'DPD'?

I know someone doing a PhD at Cambs Uni.Are these loons science graduates or arts graduates?

As Cambs Uni is the premier uni for "cancelling" stuff it doesn't agree with (not necessarily wrong just wrong in their PC view) I can't help but feel his research which is in a controversial area has to be seen as PC not actually scientifically correct for it to allow him to gain his PhD. Therefore research from such places that repeatedly cancel what they don't like has little value as it cannot be trusted as being correct scientifically, as the PC view has to dominate the facts.

Spot on.I think a high number of PhDs are effectively worthless and do little more than keep academics in academia. But here again we need to make a distinction between science and 'art'. An old schoolfriend of mine was, shall we say, 'normal' until he went to Cambridge as a mature student and got a PhD in history. He is now an unhappy socialist, but an expert in arguing because they trained him to argue. Every time we met at a reunion he'd start going off on a political tirade. Only after I told him he was acting like Frank Doberman (of Fast Show fame) did he wind it in a bit!
A PhD is essentially an apprenticeship in academic research. If you’re lucky, you might advance knowledge in the field in a significant way, but mostly you will acquire a very deep knowledge of a very narrow slice of a subject, and in the process you will demonstrate that you have learned how to conduct research.

Agreed. The issue for me is whether the research advances human knowledge in any useful way. So a PhD in vaccines, great. A PhD in football, not great. I can only conclude that 'woke science' is an oxymoron.
