seems as if the world's largest dinosaur will be visiting the Natural History museum in the new year... or a least a replica. Size-wise it does make 'Dippy' seem rather small eek Something to go and see next year yes

I am curious though that given it's 'just' a replica rather than the original bones why there aren't more replicas of dinosaurs in various museums? Surely it's not that difficult to do?

Dippy IS a replica.

They are quite expensive to organise. I'd say a full size replica of a sauropd would cost a couple of hundred thousand ££££ to do.

There was an interesting article on replica dinosaur skeletons a few days ago. Seems to be a lot more replicas even in prestigious institutions and art collections than real ones:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-63700297

"A T. rex skeleton which was expected to fetch up to $25m (£21m) at auction has been withdrawn after doubts were raised over where parts of it had come from.

Auction house Christie's confirmed to the BBC that the Tyrannosaurus Rex would not be amongst the lots going under the hammer in Hong Kong on 30 November.

It said the seller had decided to loan the skeleton to a museum instead.

Christie's did not give a reason why the sale had been withdrawn.

The New York Times reports that a US fossil company raised concerns that parts of the skeleton, named Shen, looked like replicas from another T. rex skeleton called Stan."

I'd be uncomfortable in my workshop with that set of jaws behind me.

Imagine putting that outside someone's window one night, then knocking on it.

'I do beg your pardon...' etc

They have a life-size model of one outside Trelew in Patagonia. Quite a sight when you come over the hill and see it on the plain.

Where is that going to fit in the museum?
