I note that the Cumbre Vieja volcano is erupting, I hope everybody remains safe.

This is a volcano that scientists think wil, at some point, suffer a catastrophic collapse triggering a mega tsunami, let's hope this isn't the start of that event, which would just about cap the last 18 months!

Is this the one they reckon would wipe out the Eastern seaboard of the US (and I guess Caribbean Mexico coasts too) if it collapsed? Crumbs...

Hopefully the locals and tourists are all safe in the meantime.

Yes it is, with a mega tsunami travelling at supersonic speed.

Seems to be quite a few scientific papers that have debunked this.

Can you point me at one? I am genuinely interested and can't find any credible debunking of the theory, although my google Kung Fu isn't that strong,

At last, a reason to be glad I live about as far from the coast on either side as possible!

There was a Professor on BBC R4 on PM from the University of East Anglia yesterday who confirmed that it had been more or less debunked, she stated a very low possibility of its occurrence (almost zero).

I remember Micheal Fish saying something similar about the chances of a hurricane in the Uk once…

I think she was talking about this eruption rather than the underlying theory.

And low probability doesn't sound like debunked to me 😀

I'm really interested in this. Visiting Timanfya on Lanzarote was really interesting, and to think its technically still active. It changed the landscape once, and presumably could again.

We must be due a mega volcanic eruption soon? Last one being Mt St Helens?

You can have an ex-hurricane or storm with hurricane speed winds in the UK, but not actually a hurricane.
