What's going on here then?

Someone says:
WWI (1914-18): A junior officer and NCO from an unidentified German Feldartillerie regiment modelling what appears to be some kind of portable sound locating apparatus.
But I don't know. Observations: The person on the left is a bit darker than the one on the right who has his/hers hand through his/hers arm.
Is the description correct or something else?
Google says:
Drakegoodman scanned this 1917-ish photo of Soviet planespotters in exotic headgear; according to a commenter, the binox are focused at infinity "so that when you found the source of the sound by turning your head, you could see the aircraft creating that sound."
but then google also says they are German, not Russian.

Well, almost right. It was actually some of the earliest known equipment for a sport only known later as 'honkwiching'. Mostly adopted later on by tuba players where they would honk sandwiches directly from tuba to tuba. In this earliest form they were limited to smaller items such as olives or ritz crackers, before later, as the equipment developed, to be able to use small apples.
