Apologies if this is a repost but I just saw an article about this and thought it was fascinating ... an asteroid with enough precious/other metals content to give everyone on Earth $93B! Or maybe not ...

Simple article: here

Planetary Science Journal paper: here

If only it crash landed, safely, in my back garden.

It's a bit like sucking up the oceans for deposits, or filtering them, how much time and money would be needed to get it to supercede boring old open cast or deep mining here on earth.

So, that’s a bit like the drugs bust that claim “100 million of cocaine seized”

It’s only that expensive because of prohibition
The metal in that asteroid is only expensive because it is rare.

The moment humans work out how to extract it and return it to earth, prices collapse.

Indeed hence the "or not" bit of my post ... and it is pointed out in the article. Though presumably the chances are the costs of recovering anything from the asteroid would be such that it may not be significantly cheaper.

Anyway the "value" is just a bit of fun, more interested to see what the mission to it finds. According to Wiki it is scheduled to launch in July 2022.
