Help me solve a maths equation.
Discussion
Ok here goes.
Alan, Bert and Charlie have £46 between them.
The money is shared between Alan and Bert at a ratio of 9:5
The ration between Bert and Charlie is 2:1
How much money does Alan have?
A-£10
B-£24
C-£36
D-£18
Rather the just post your guess at correct answer can you also show and explain your working out please.
Many thanks.

A + B + C = 46
B = A*5/9
C = B/2 = A*5/18
A + A*5/9 + A*5/18 = 46
A(1 + 5/9 + 5/18) = 46
A*(33/18) = 46
A = 46*18/33 = 25.09
Are you sure the question is right? I've rushed through so I may have it wrong, but I don't think the answer is there
I got 25.09 as well. Probably made the same mistake.B = A*5/9
C = B/2 = A*5/18
A + A*5/9 + A*5/18 = 46
A(1 + 5/9 + 5/18) = 46
A*(33/18) = 46
A = 46*18/33 = 25.09

I'm with sxmwht, I don't think the answer is there.
I used brute force, checked 24 first as the most likely
24 / 9 = 2.666
2.666 X 5 = 13.333
13.333 / 2 = 6.666
So you get these 3 values for the ratios 9:5 and 2:1
9:5 - 24:13.333
2:1 - 13.333:6.666
Summed up they give a total of 43.999
Using 25 gets you much closer, but still not 46

According to my calculations, none of the above.
1). A + B + C = 46
2). A = 9/5B = 1.8B
3). B = 2C
Therefore put equation 3 into equation 2 and you get
4) A = 1.8 x 2C = 3.6C
Put equation 3 and 4 into equation 1 and you get
5) 3.6C + 2C + C = 46
Which becomes
6) 6.6C = 46
Therefore C= 46/6.6 = 6.9696....
Put this back into equation 4 and you get
A = 3.6 * 6.9696.... = £ 25.09
Hope this helps, you might want to check my maths though.
Edit - bit slow on the reply there.

Well my logic is as follows
Alan. 18 shares
Bert. 10 shares
Charlie. 5 shares
Total. 33 shares
Ie for Alan with 9 Bert gets 5. Double up above
For Bert to get 2 Charlie gets 1 multiply by 5 to match Berts 10 share
Therefore Alan should have £46 x 18 / 33. Which is £25.09 ie none of suggested answers unless it is trick ie he has at least £24?

25.09 here too
Ratios are:
A = 9
B = 5
C = B/2
So A = 9 B = 5, C = 2.5 (B/2)
Seemed like the most straightforward method to me, too - none of this equations stuff.Ratios are:
A = 9
B = 5
C = B/2
So A = 9 B = 5, C = 2.5 (B/2)
The £46 is made up of 16.5 units (A9 + B5 + C2.5) which is 2.787878 per unit.
A has 9 of them (9 x 2.787878) = 25.09.

I had an educated guess at £24 myself but according to the bloke at work daughters school who online lesson it was from the answer is £36.
But that seemed wrong to me hence asking on here.

It’s not the wrong answer, it’s just the wrong question total should definitely be £66.
The way the teacher said to work it out is like this, this is from memory as was at work earlier when we was discussing it.
You put 9 5 2 1 in a line then you times the 9 and 2 together to get 18, then the 5 and the 2 making 10, the 1 and 2 making 2, then finally the 1 and 5 making 5
Put them in a line as follows. 18 10 2 5
Then for what ever reason you discard the 10.
Then something like just times the 18 by 2 to give 36 the answer according to the teacher.
As you say though when you work it out backwards from £36 it gives a total of £66
Will ask him again tomorrow at work to make sure he had all correct figures.

If thats the standard of teaching better all kids are kept at home forever & have them taught by th expect cat or dogYou put 9 5 2 1 in a line then you times the 9 and 2 together to get 18, then the 5 and the 2 making 10, the 1 and 2 making 2, then finally the 1 and 5 making 5
