Young relative, (proverbial bright 11 year old) fancies a microscope. She's genuinely interested in science subjects so I reckon it's worth getting her something better than a kid's toy, ideally something that she can use up to A level biology.

What features should I look for? Is a display screen better than a traditional eyepiece? How much do I need to spend to get something that will last a few years?

Thanks but yikes. I was thinking I could get a useful one for < £200.

I got my 9 year old this (it’s excellent - I’m a former palynologist and it’s better than the Leica’s I used for my PhD, albeit a long time ago).

Sadly the first thing she wanted to look at was *my* blood...

Also thinking about getting a binocular one for larger objects
