Starting tonight until 23rd, Jupiter and Saturn will appear at their closest for almost 400 years.

I've been watching them close in on each other all year.

Yeah I am hoping to get out and get some pictures if I can, will need to be well outside of Milton Keynes with a good view of the horizon though.

A once-in-a-lifetime event involving the two gas giants will occur over the next week, peaking on December 21st.

This “Christmas star”, or Christmas kiss as it has also been dubbed, will be the closest the two gas giants have appeared in the skies since 1623.

However, that conjunction was not visible in northern latitudes. You would need to go back to 1226 for a comparable conjunction visible in Irish/British skies.

This forthcoming conjunction will be the two planets’ closest pass this millennium until Christmas day 2874.

Jupiter and Saturn have been very visible throughout the summer and autumn, they are now very low in the SW sky and may only be visible at sunset 16:30 ish

Weather dependent, I normally take a walk up Slieve Gullion during the Winter Solstice, to the Passage Tomb, the setting sun illuminates the tomb at this time of year. Like Newgrange only older. It may just be the ideal place to view the Conjunction, weather dependent.

Above all, events like the great conjunction inspire us to look up at the beautiful night sky and ponder the meaning of it all.

I watch this, and realize just how insignificant we are.

The stars have aligned, and "Merge threads" has worked!

It will be too cloudy for me tonight but I think I have found a decent raised vantage point when/if the weather allows.

Plus I need/would like to buy some binoculars

My humblest apologies Eric, I did search, but as you know the search function on PH isn’t great.
It was after midnight and I will admit to having more than a couple of brandies.
Maybe we could swap numbers and I’ll WhatsApp you any time I’m thinking of starting a new thread, it won’t be that often, I reckon I’ve started less than ten in all my time on PH.

I will say a decade of the rosary for you this evening and light a candle for your intentions, by way of an apology.
I’m glad you liked the pictures.

It wasn't clear to me that they were your pictures; they're very good. Thanks for sharing.

I've bought some binoculars from Argos but sadly the weather forecast is poor. Sunday evening looks as though there might be a chance.

You won me over when you said brandy

I might need that in my hip flask ...the weather is looking worse and worse for the weekend into Monday sadly

The Catholic church is about to do tier 3 lockdown I guess on these things in 2020.

The issue with the conjunction in the UK, apart from the weather, is that that they are near to the horizon as well.

If we get clear weather, get to a high vantage point and you should see it in the SW around 16:30, just above the horizon.

Make sure the candles aren't too bright or you might ruin your night vision.

Too cloudy here as expected and the Exeter University live-feed on YouTube was abandoned for the same reason.

My binoculars are here so fingers crossed for tomorrow

Perfectly clear sky hear in north Dublin. Great view at 17.30. Unfortunately I couldn't find my scope mount, so no pictures. Have to make the most of it as we may not get a better view over the coming days.

I can see it fine and I’m only about 12 miles north of Exeter.

What part of North Dublin are you in?

I was brought up in that part of the world.
