Artifact or not?

Not sure this is the correct sub-forum, but none of the others seemed suitable. First stop before trying specialists, but knowing the depth & breadth of knowledge on PH, I thought it worth a try here.
My wife was out running yesterday, and found a spherical rock on the edge of a recently ploughed field. It's about 4" dia., has a blind hole around 1/4" dia./1/2" deep, very dense and, whilst far from polished, is slightly smooth. There are what look like iron streaks distributed randomly around it. Under close examination, it looks a little like a smooth brain, if that makes sense?
So, any rock-doctors out there care to make an educated guess as to what it is/was? A friend suggested a Roman loom stone, but they have holes right the way through.
