I’m trying to help my 12 year old with his homework, but am stumped by one question...to the point where it has now become an obsession (of mine, not his) to find the answer.

It’s a picture puzzle which starts each chapter in his book. They are normally easy, such as this one from the chapter on forces:

Footprint, lorry, umbrellas, ice skates, door = fluid

However, this one from the chapter on genes has us/me stumped:

So far I think the possible ‘letters’ and answer are (hidden in case you don’t want to be influenced by my initial thoughts):

Seeds, weeds, eggs?
Lungs, chest, x-ray?
Leaves, trees, plants?
Lens, eye, iris?
Eggs, nest?
Chromosomes?
Spring, slinky, toy?

This almost gets me to extinct (which would seem to be a valid answer) via eggs, x-ray, trees, iris, nest, chromosome, toy. However, I am not sure seeds are really eggs, and spring seems more likely than toy for the last picture, so I suspect that’s wrong.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, but I don't think that's a tail...it's definitely a hand stretching/wiggling a 'slinky' type spring.

First picture looks like milkweed seeds and the last one is a hand wiggling a long spring...

Tapeworm??? The last pic is someone waving a slinky and making a transverse wave (S, T or W)?

But how does the first picture represent that first letter?

The penultimate one could be B for bacteria, but it's hard to see.

They look like stereotypical chromosomes to me.

I did say the picture wasn't very good! I think you are spot on though.
