Such a cracking name for a scientist for a young man wishing to be an egg-head and a great series too .

Patrick Moore never officially studied for a science degree. Moore was the ultimate amateur astronomer of his era. He received honorary doctorates later in life.

Heinz Wolff played up to the whole "mad scientist" stereotype. I remember hearing that his German accent was laid on to that end. I know he was born in Germany, but he was only 11 when he got here.

Anyway, both great people. RIP them both.

Show me scientifically a post saying How Scientists looked in the the old days on here before I posted it .....

I have to confess to being fond of Patrick. He gave me my astronomy diploma when I graduated. He missed very few episodes of the Sky at Night, the main one being due to a dodgy duck egg!

Is it my imagination, or did a lot of scientists smoke in the old days?

It's your imagination. Most ADULTS smoked in those days.

Rest assured that I know a few scientists/physicists that still look like that. That's despite the management trying to get them to look more normal when customers are shown around.

Not many years ago when I did my Degrees, some lecturers were certainly rather eccentric to say the least. Better that than some personality-free teacher who just wants to get as many students out of the door as possible.

In the spirit of this sub-forum (not actually one of my lecturers):

Was chatting to a bloke at the weekend who was a mate of Patrick Moores. Told some funny stories of how he, Patrick and Brian May would sit around drinking at wine chatting about any old stuff.
