Composite metal foam armour not only stops an impacting bullet - it reduces it to dust. If this was April 1st, I'd be left with fewer questions. Incredible stuff.

They are called Syntactic foams, a type is used on the USS zumwalt.

very early days and not been used much, it has massive potential but I would say producing a uniform product is the biggest issue, i.e for car crash zones.

It could be. AM would allow a consistent design internal structure so you can design a foam arrangement and always get the same thing but build/cool times and the inherent cost of AM machines that can do this kind of work will keep it away from true mass production for a long long time.

it is like carbon fibre, batch production with very expensive manufacturing costs, hard to produce at a competitive price for the mass market.
