Today (In the northern hemisphere at least) Is the winter solstice, and therefore summer solstice in the southern hemisphere. This happens when the Sun rises directly above the tropic of Capricorn, giving us the "Shortest day" This (as I've just found out) does not give us both, the earliest sun set and the latest sun rise, these 2 events can be days apart, It just give you the day with the least amount of daylight. It also certainly won't give us the coldest day, because seasonal shift takes a long time. I appreciate this is a little "Primary Science" to a lot of you but I was wondering if anyone had some more highbrow science facts about, solstices they can share?

And now I can't edit the title, I wanted it to say "Winter" not "winer" of course! banghead

Oh I've just noticed, someone fixed it. Thanks smile

The sun is actually CLOSER to the sun at this time of year than in summer.

Man sat on chair on BBC Breakfast news asked if we would see a real live druid today at Stonehenge.

I'm pretty sure that the sun never moves away from itself silly

This is true, BUT the northern hemisphere tilts away from it. Therefore the sun's heat has to travel through more of the earth's atmosphere and cools before it reaches us, compared with our summer, the changes in distance to the sun are so small that these do not cause the seasons like some would have you believe. It's not the shift in the distance to the sun caused by the tilt either as this distance change is even smaller.

I know. Some people think that one of the reasons why we have cooler weather in the winter is due to the fact that the sun is further away - which is not true, of course.

scratchchin

The winter solstice is regarded as the first day of winter.

Yet, the summer solstice is only a few days away from midsummer's day.

Seems a bit uneven somehow?

Not only is the effective air path longer, but the radiation is spread over a larger area due to the low angle of incidence. Even with the inverse square law, a small change in sun-earth distance will not make a big difference.

Oh - so your inaccuracy in your assumption is not even alleviated by the fact that you might have been guessing.

Your recent posts on these science threads seem to be purely in response to something I've said. Are you capable of original thought?

I really do think that you have become some sort of "Thread Stalker". Keep it up - at some point you will end up being banned.

My thought too.

I've come to the conclusion that the chap is disturbed and needs therapy.

Seriously.
