I have been watching this one for a while and, usually, there are 1-2 'quakes per day at up to 2.5 on the Richter scale.

After a week away from my computer I return to find this.... (check the graph at the bottom)

http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earth...

I am a geoscientist (not in the realm of volcanology) but it seems to me that this is a massive earthquake swarm indicative of an imminent erruption.....

If it doesn't side-vent like last time in 2011 it might be an interesting event.

Or it could just end with a little puff of smoke.

I think the OP underplays the potential of Katla a bit... wink

'Seismic swarm'? Sounds like a 2005 B-movie from daytime TV.

I didn't want to come across all "tabloid headline sensationalistic", but yes....If Katla goes off with a bang, it will be a major planet-changing event.

I wonder what happens if it is really bad? Meldown of markets, ice-age, lawlessness kind of bad.

At least I'll be mortgage free smile

It will be like a giant 'Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls' - only without Bear Grylls to rescue us when the yucca root we spent an hour cooking turns out to be a piece of wood.

Would be interesting to see how the different part of society would cope; from the benefit scroungers who would no longer get paid for doing nothing, to the wealthy with nothing as it dissappeared with the stock market collapse.

I would enjoy the cooler climate in the Middle East, the climbing oil prices, and the surge of shale gas exploration drilling in the UK smile

I think a mini ice-age for a few years would be great, one of those defining points of human history, and we'd be able say 'I was there'.

Unless we're all dead.

The most useful skills would be practical/survival ones, leadership and probably the ability to fight when required. It would certainly reshuffle the pack. People who currently earn a living talking bks would have to do something useful, and practical people who suffer because they can't talk bks might ascend.

I thought the last Icelandic eruption (Eyjafjalokul??) has always previously been a 'precursor' to this much bigger one?

Katla, is located about 25 km away from Eyjafjallajokull. In the past, an eruption at Eyjafjallajokull was always followed by an eruption at Katla, although in 2010 the volcano was quiet.

I snowmobiled on the Katla glacier a few months ago, the guide was very interesting although did say it's always gone soon after eyjaffajokull and is far bigger, he reckoned it could close airspace down for a whole year!

They don't look very appealing. Malnourished and scraggy so very little quality meat? I imagine they'd be similar to a chicken wing.
