The Overpopulation Issue

I've been giving this some thought lately as I work in science and I'm surrounded by people who are working towards ways of sustaining lives, both on an individual level or indirectly at country/global level.

Is there any real debate on methods/ideas to deal with the massive population growth in the relatively recent present? I assume it's a massively taboo subject as there are no easy answers and certainly not ones that anyone would want to entertain in their lifetimes.

I find it interesting that we have guys in the same building trying to save lives no matter how bleak the outlook may be, and yet down the corridor we have people trying to figure out how the hell we're going to protect our earth in the face of the continuing population boom.

I'm sure nobody is seriously suggesting that we just let nature take its course and let people die, but the advances in saving lives seem to massively outweigh and any advances in how we sustain all these people and indeed the planet we live on. Maybe nature willeventually self-correct the issue?
