Been a brilliant idea on naming this ship, really got it into the public domain. Hats off to them, hope people will continue to be interested. The RSS Sir David Attenborough? In this day an age I can't think of a better choice to be honest with our social media and BBC2 ! biggrin The main point is it's fantastic we are still spending money on something that matters. Cough.

Just Finished reading this

Where the RSS Ernest Shackleton played a big part.

Brilliant idea?

They ran a public vote to get a winning name then when they got one called it something completely different! laugh

Hold on, that's not on the Science thread, in a thread full of trainspotters and other pervs ... I had to buy some tupperware to eat my Friday tea out of, and a tartan flask, just before i could read it. So this thread stands.

They are probably demanding it be steam powered knowing them. whistle

AFAIK Attenborough didn't even come second; so why bother with a vote?

To me it just shows the general dissatisfaction and feeling of alienation from decision making amongst voters generally. So when "they" throw a triviality for people to have a say on, people don't treat it seriously, just giving back a big "F U". So then "they" ignore it, which just reinforces the feelings of alienation even more so.

I think there are two possbilities. Either the organisers really thought that the poll would result in a sensible name, or they threw their hat into the social media maelstrom for publicity knowing full well that if they didn't like the result they'd ignore it but take the publicity.

To me it doesn't show dissatisfaction or alienation - save those for politics - but a delight among the social media chatterers and overgrown children to say something silly for a cheap laugh.

There was no way that Boaty McBoatface would have ended up on the ship. Had it done so the social media brigade would have been back next time with wky Mcwkbks.

It has worked out well enough. The organisers got massive publicity, the kids had a laugh, and most importantly the ship got a proper name.

In a worldwide vote how many were British?

Reddit wasn't paying for it so why should they name it?

Anyhow they've cursed Sir DA with 2016 now they've named it after him

If they had called it bmbf it would have had publicity forever.

The press world wide would have reported innit whenever it arrived in a port. Lots of publicity and maybe funding from the back of it.

Now it will,be forgotten about.

It wasn't rude or crude. They should have kept it.

The objective wasn't eternal publicity, it was to give a serious boat a suitable name. BMBF was stupid, undignified and quite ridiculous, simply untenable.

They were never going to give it a stupid name. They're trying to keep up the pretence of serious science to maintain a British presence in the area to support our claims in Antarctica.

It's been a great way they can get this ship into the public eye. Everyone's a winner.

This made me laugh

I think the US has to name their next aircraft carrier in the same way.

USS McDonaldTrump

Appropriate for fastfood marketing also

I thought it should have been named after Frank Wild but Sir David is almost as good a name to tag on the ship.

BMBF was mildly amusing for a few days but I'm glad it didn't stick.

While it is a silly name, it would have actually been brilliant for engaging with Children about exploring the natural world with science. They could have children's books about his adventures, toys and models could have been licensed to contribute towards new research.

A lost opportunity, this decision was not made by NERC but by Jo Johnson the so called minister of science who has no science or engineering qualifications.

Few politicians have (and that's part of the problem). We've also lost the generation who went through WW2 and so had some perspective. I think it's no coincidence that politics has turned into chattering mush since they retired.

Exactly.

There is nothing 'untenable' about some letters on the side of a ship. It's just a name and a name can be fun without meaning the boat doesn't do proper science.

I agree, but why have the vote in the first place if that is the case?

Because they were a bit naive and never thought that a deliberately stupid name would go viral and actually win. If they ever did this sort of thing again, they'd just have a short list of names to pick from.
