Watched a youtube vid last night about the latest goings on at CERN and the progression of thoery regarding the Higgs boson discovery at 125eV.

Interesting that the discovery of the higgs boson was at the higher end of the energy level for supersymmetry to still play out. And also that further experiments are being devised to see if the higgs boson is an elementary particle or if it is composite.

As the higgs particle has an associated field, called the higgs field, there was further development on its properties, now that they are able to feed in this 125eV finding for the particle.

An interesting development is that the higgs field currently sits at a given energy level for the entire universe, but this energy level is not at its 'lowest state'. And as the universe tends to progress everything to its lowest state it leaves the possibility that at some point in the future, or at a point in time that has already happened (far away), this lower energy state in the higgs field may have already been achieved (somewhere in the universe).

If/when it happens this lower energy state of higgs field will enact a hugely heightened 'force' on matter, that will spread from the origin at the speed of light, with the possibility that as this bubble boundary of the higgs field change passes through a human body for example, it could turn that body instantly in to a black hole, being the drastic change in how it affects matter and mass.

CERN at the moment is preparing to become active again in spring 2015 when it will operate at higher energy levels in pursuit of supersymmetry particles and further investigation of the higgs boson.

Also interesting to see that CERN is basically just at the begiining of its list of experiments and was always designed as a 20 year operation program.

The presentation is given by Joseph Lykken who is the Deputy Director at Fermi Lab.

The machine itself was conceived of well over 20 years ago... we are just in the early planning phase of decommissioning current detectors... next decade! to be replaced with more radiation hard upgrades to cope with increased luminosity beyond what will be acheived in the next few years.
The 'old' detectors will be nicely radioactive and will be cut up to search for magnetic monopoles of all things...
