Unifiying Theory vs Dark Matter/Energy

As I type I'm watching a ddebate of Youtube about the search for a Unifying Theory. One issue raised is Dark Matter & Dark Energy and the admission the we essentially know sod all about them. It then occured to me (in my ignorance) that we can't surely understand one (unifying theory) with knowing a fair amount about the other?

A view from someone who knows more on these things would be much appreciated!
