For years I have been making ice cubes in a tray in my freezer. Always done it and its always worked perfectly. water from the tap goes in the tray and pop it on the top shelf in the freezer and leave to freeze. When done remove tray, twist and out pops cubes. No problems for 10 years (length of time I have owned both the house and freezer and been master of my own domain and in charge of ice for alcohol).

Two or three months ago it all went wrong and has stayed wrong, same procedure but now when the ice is made and I remove it from the freezer and twist the plastic tray the ice just shatters into tiny little shards and is unusable.

I have tried washing the tray and even putting it on a different shelf to make ice, also tried warm water instead of cold but it always shatters now.

Why? I can't get my head around this at all, nothing has changed yet I cant get cubes any more.

New one to me. Have you fitted a water softener or filter?

Find out if it's the water or the freezer by swapping variables with a neighbour -ie you freeze some of their water while they freeze some of yours (same trays).

No change to the routine at all, not different water (bottled or boiled) and no filter, its straight from the same tap.

I have my own thoughts, maybe after 10 years the tray has scratches or little abrasions in the cube making area that are gripping the ice cubes and preventing the tray from flexing, sort of holding the ice and braking it.

I am going to try a different tray as my first experiment in solving this.

Something has changed with your water supply and you're getting more gasses/impurities in the water?

I think I'd use diferent (bottled still) water-same tray first

Then same (tap) water different tray

then throw away the tray
