Ok, stick with me. smile

Sometimes when I pour a glass of something fizzy, be it Coke, Beer etc I get bubbles "stuck" to the side if the glass which I like and looks visually appealing. But then other times no bubbles at all? Same drink, same glass.

So what's going on?

Have a Google round, but as far as I can remember, the science of bubbles in a carbonated drink is that they are caused / become visible due to microscopic dirt particles on the inside of the glass.

Hence, a dirtier glass produces more bubbles.

Theoretically a perfectly microscopically clean glass will produce no bubbles at all.

True. Bubbles need something to nucleate on.

Drop a Minto into a bottle of Coke.

That's what the pretty patterns are for in the bottom of glasses, different brands of beer have different patterns on their glasses because they make different types/amounts of bubbles too.

Doesn't have the be dirt, microscopic scratches will do - an old glass will likely cause more bubbles than a new one.

Bubbles on the side of a glass are indicators of glasses that have not been washed properly. When assessors check on the quality of beer served in pubs it is one of the markers that they look at.
