Fascinating stuff in my opinion. Sceptics please feel free to debunk/explain. I don't think anybody is writing a book on the back of this by the way.

Forty years ago today, a four-man crew of an Army Reserve helicopter was flying over Mansfield, Ohio, around 11:00 p.m. when they "encountered a near midair collision with an unidentified flying object," according to the official report, signed and submitted by the crew after the incident.

A full explanation for this terrifying UFO close encounter has never been offered, and to this day, the helicopter-UFO incident remains one of the most credible -- and terrifying -- in the history of the subject.

The commander of the helicopter, Maj. Larry Coyne, and his crew, thought at first that the light on the horizon was a radio tower beacon.

"We were flying along at about 2,500 feet when the crew chief on the helicopter observed a red light on the east horizon. He then informed me that the light was closing on the helicopter -- that it was coming at us on a collision course," Coyne told this reporter in 1975.

"I looked to the right and observed that the object became bigger and the light became brighter, and I began to descend the helicopter toward the ground, to get out of the collision course path. We were descending and this object was like a missile locked onto the helicopter, only it came at us on a perpendicular angle, to hit us almost broadside.

"It looked like we were going to collide with it and we braced for impact, and then I heard the crewmen in the back say, 'Look up!' and I observed this craft stopped directly in front of us -- stopped -- it was hovering, right over the helicopter!" READ MORE

Almost a week and no-one's posted the ubiquitous Giorgio Tsoukalos meme or bleated about Occam's Razor.

What's up with that?

Anyway, wasn't aware of this one Reg, interesting case.

I just a copy of Marler's "Triangular UFOs" for my birthday.

When I was a kid I was fascinated by UFO's, the X-Files and all things 'alien'. I used to get all the books out of the library and scare myself silly with all the tales of abduction and cattle mutilation.

It would be pretty cool if we were being 'visited' by beings from another planet, however I doubt it is actually true. It is interesting though to read about these rare cases where 'something' may well have happened. I've never heard of this one either, and I read a huge amount about this sort of thing when I was a teenager!

Completely wrong. It was obviously marsh gas.

More seriously, don't know, only have that article to judge from. Doubt it's aliens though, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence after all.

"This craft, from the angle that we saw it, was cigar-shaped. It had no wings, no vertical or horizontal stabilizer, was approximately 60 feet long, 15-20 feet in height."

"As far as the vehicle itself, there's no doubt in our minds what it looked like. A craft that can move at terrific speeds in excess of 1,000 knots, and then stop on a dime..."

That's a very interesting helicopter! scratchchin..... smile

Same as myself, terrified myself with as many cattle mutilation books as I could find.

Imagine, it's dark and you can't see the blade disc:

so, 60 feet long, 15-20 feet tall.

And of course:

"there's no doubt in our minds what it looked like. A craft that can move at terrific speeds in excess of 1,000 knots, and then stop on a dime..."

What exactly does a "craft" that can do that look like? Only because our high speed craft have to batter their way through our atmosphere do we associate "streamlining" with speed. Absolutely no reason why an extra terrestrial craft would have to look like that! (Afterall, if you're smart enough to be able to counteract the universal force of gravity, mear air resistance should be childs play). And of course, once you've negated your crafts mass, "stopping on a dime" is no issue either, and you can make your craft as big and ugly as you like............

TBH, the whole "flying saucer" stuff is really just a left over from the 1940's, where streamlining was the new cutting edge science.

In reality, there is easily as much chance of an extra terrestrial craft looking like this:

(which also leaves you much more room to pack some light holiday reading and you flip flops for the beach.........)

Typical UFO/conspiracy/religious nut non-sense.

It is not the sceptics place to debunk, it is down to you to prove your claim.

If you cannot, then please do not assume aliens/gov't/god did it.

Looks like a typical they got disorientated and mis identified something that was not alien.

(looked at another report as well as the Huff Post from that reporter)

This ole chestnut.

How about extraordinary claims require extraordinary investigation?

No - because an extraordinary claim can be completely made up or be made by someone who is totally clueless. And authorities don't have the resources to waste investigating dumb claims made by the clueless, ignorant or mischevious.

It may be a chestnut but it is a valid chestnut.

What about claims by military pilots or astronauts or are they totally clueless?

Why do you hold them above all else when we also know they make mistakes? They have been shown to mistake planets for aliens. They get disorientated. They are not superhuman. For example how is the speed in this particular claim verified? Do pilots go on an "UFO spotting course and how to measure speed at night from a single point of light with no reference points"?

And to continue, this keeps coming up in many claims, "we must hold a pilot as a valid claim as he/she is a pilot" yet there is no corroborating evidence. It is just because they are a pilot, the pro brigade hold that as some sort of qualification beyond question when we know it is not all it is hyped up to be.

Let the evidence speak for itself.

Sometimes, they are.
